About Us

We are the faculty and students of History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Criminal Justice and Education, a powerful collection of people who use reason and reflection to understand the most important matters of human life. Our programs are strong, rich, and full of opportunities – a start here can launch careers in medicine, law, education, politics and both clinical and experimental psychology.

This past semester we created new programs in Early Childhood Education, African American Studies, Addiction Studies, Philosophy and Genocide. We are also expanding our two academic centers: Democracy House and the Center for Genocide and the Holocaust. These centers engage us locally and internationally in issues surrounding justice, and help develop civic confidence through work on community problems. Democracy House has a powerful national reach, serving as a model for colleges and universities across the country, recently earning a place on President Obama’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.

One of the hallmarks of our programs is close collaboration between students and faculty. Qualified students may serve as section leaders in courses and have the opportunity to conduct independent research under the supervision of one of our faculty.

Thomas Jefferson said a proper education enables everyone to judge for themselves what will secure or endanger their freedom. By studying with us you are actively equipping yourself to be the sort of person he had in mind.

Welcome. I am glad you are here.

In the past, we have organized presentations by professional educators and sponsored educational trips to Boston, Salem, and other historic or education-related sites.
