Welcome to the Education Program at Middlesex County College! You will engage in an
\nacademically rigorous program that will prepare you not only to transfer to a four year college,
\nbut also provide you with field experience in the educational setting(s) of your
\nchoice!<\/p>\n
This field experience will allow you to work with and observe a teacher in an educational
\nsetting. Observation is a wonderful tool to help build understanding of the teacher\u2019s role,
\ntheir pedagogy, and how they interact with students and colleagues, along with applying
\neducational concepts learned in your lecture classes at MCC.<\/p>\n
You will engage in two<\/strong> observation field experiences. For Introduction to Education (EDU121)\u00a0or Introduction to Early Childhood Education (EDU122) or Introduction to Special Education\u00a0and Disabilities in American Society (IDC123), 25 hours<\/span><\/strong> are required for the semester and for\u00a0Education Field Experience (EDU280), 50 hours<\/span><\/strong> are required in TWO educational settings,\u00a0where one setting includes students with disabilities for the semester.<\/p>\n The grade level (Pre-K-12th grade), the type of educator you would like to observe (special\u00a0education, general education, or bilingual education) and where you would like to observe are up\u00a0to you for EDU121<\/strong>. For EDU122<\/strong>, students must observe in an early childhood setting, any type\u00a0of educator. For IDC123<\/strong>, students must observe with a certified special education teacher, any\u00a0grade level. It is recommended that you decide the grade and type of educator you want to\u00a0observe before you start out-reach to schools. Keep an open-mind and use this as an\u00a0opportunity to discover your interests!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n For EDU280<\/strong>, you must observe in TWO educational settings; one setting should be the grade\u00a0level you plan to seek certification in and one setting that includes students with disabilities. For\u00a0example, if you have decided early childhood special education is your goal, then you must\u00a0observe in a pre-k special education setting. It is very important for transferring and eventual\u00a0teacher certification that the educational setting matches the certification level and type you\u00a0apply for upon completion of your teacher education program and that you have observed in a\u00a0setting that includes students with disabilities.<\/strong><\/em> In order to help narrow down your career preferences and link these to the appropriate field placement, please complete the EDU 280 G.E.T.S. Model Worksheet<\/a>. Use the results to select field placements that match your career goals and avoid selecting placements based on convenience.<\/p>\n Most school districts require students to be fingerprinted before they can begin their field
\nexperience. MCC highly recommends that you get fingerprinted as soon as possible!<\/span><\/strong>
\nFingerprinting is $26.00 for student teachers + $10.00 for processing = $36.00 total cost
\nNJ State mandates that you have a current Mantoux<\/strong>, Tuberculin Skin Test for TB.<\/p>\n
