Education is a rigorous curriculum that leads to a rewarding career! Education majors at MCC build the strong academic background needed for success regardless of where they continue their education.
Our Education Transfer AS Program prepares you for transferring to a college/university teacher preparation bachelor’s program. Degree requirements include courses in communications, mathematics, science, technology, social sciences/humanities and education. This course work will both fulfill general education requirements towards transfer and will introduce students to the field of education.
As part of the core education requirements, students will engage in two observational field experiences in an educational setting of their choice.
Depending on your career interests, the Education Transfer A.S. Program is a 64-66 credit program. You will need a 3.0 GPA to transfer to a teacher preparation bachelor’s program upon completion of this program.

Students wishing to pursue a career in education will need to continue their education at a bachelor degree granting institution. There are many wonderful options for you to consider. Unfortunately, education is a complex field and each college will have its own requirements. It is hoped that the guidance provided here will assist you making course selections that will work well with your goals. Meeting with an advisor is strongly suggested. Students will need to have a 3.0 GPA to transfer to a teacher preparation bachelor’s degree program.
To get started, you will first want to decide what certification level you are interested in pursuing. You will then need to decide on a college and an academic content specialty area. You have several course options in this program. It is very important that you choose these courses based on your career and transfer goals. Academic Content Courses (i.e. math, science, history, English, etc.) OR Core Requirement Courses (i.e. foreign language) at the college you plan to transfer to are great options.

If your desired content area is not listed, investigate the curriculum requirements at the transfer college of your choice and use NJ Transfer to determine which MCC courses to take.

The Education Transfer AS Program at MCC is a rigorous program that will help students explore and prepare for entrance into the educational field. Students will need a 3.0 GPA to apply for NJ State Teacher Certification.
NJ Teacher Certification is multidimensional. Thus, you will have two or more majors. Your first major will be education type (general, special or bilingual education) and grade level (early, elementary, middle or high school); your second major will be a content area. ALL students applying for certification in the state of NJ, regardless of grade level, need to select a content major (examples could be Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.) . They will take classes in this content, along with education classes. Click here to learn more about certification and induction.
As of 2017-2018 school year, students that have gained entry into a NJ State accredited teacher preparation program must pass the edTPA, which assesses pedagogical content knowledge, before they commence student teaching. Students will now complete TWO semesters of student teaching (Clinical Practice) in the same school.
After successful completion of Clinical Practice, passing the Praxis II Subject test in their certification area(s), and a GPA of 3.0+, students will be issued a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) after they graduate with their bachelor's or master's degree in education. CEAS holders must obtain employment in order to work towards Standard Certification. Once employed, CEAS teachers will complete two years of the Provisional Teacher Process (PTP) in their school district. CEAS teachers will be mentored throughout the two school years by expert teachers and must obtain two Effective or Highly Effective ratings on the AchieveNJ instrument used by the school district. Once the PTP process is completed, CEAS teachers will receive their Standard NJ State Teaching Certification.

Middlesex County College encourages education students to examine career opportunities, including which teachers are in high demand right now, in order to create effective career goals. Knowing the positions that are posted most often can help students better use their G.E.T.S. Model to make informed choices about courses, tracks and eventual transfer. Most New Jersey school districts use Applitrack. Click on the school district you would like to review to be brought to their current available positions. Use this to determine how you can make yourself more marketable and which areas in education are in high demand.
You can also use search engines, such as NJ School Jobs, NJEA and K12JobSpot, to browse available teacher positions in New Jersey and in other states.
