The Middlesex County College Dental Hygiene program is a competency based curriculum. Competencies describe the abilities expected of a dental hygiene graduate upon entry into the Dental Hygiene profession. Competencies combine skills, understanding, and professional values and are performed independently in realistic settings.<\/p>\n

CORE COMPETENCIES (C)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
C.1<\/td>\nApply a professional code of ethics in all endeavors.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.2<\/td>\nAdhere to state and federal laws, recommendations, and regulations in the provision of dental hygiene care.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.3<\/td>\nPromote patient health and wellness using critical thinking and problem solving.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.4<\/td>\nUsed evidence-based decision making to evaluate and incorporate emerging treatment modalities.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.5<\/td>\nPerform on-going self-assessment for lifelong learning and professional growth.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.6<\/td>\nPromote the profession through service activities and affiliations with professional organizations.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.7<\/td>\nProvide quality assurance mechanism for health services.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
C.8<\/td>\nCommunicate effectively with individuals and groups from diverse populations.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION (HP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
HP.1<\/td>\nPromote the values of oral and general health and wellness to the public and organizations withing and outside the profession.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
HP.2<\/td>\nRespect the goals, values, beliefs, and preferences of the patient while promoting optimal oral and general health.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
HP.3<\/td>\nRefer patients who may have a physiologic, psychological, and\/or social problems for comprehensive evaluation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
HP.4<\/td>\nIdentify individual and population risk factors and develp strategies that promote health related quality of life.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
HP.5<\/td>\nEvaluate and utilize methods to ensure the health and safety of the patient and the dental hygienist in the delivery of dental hygiene.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (CM)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
CM.1<\/td>\nAssess the oral health needs of the community and the resources available to facilitate access to care.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
CM.2<\/td>\nProvide screening referral, and educational services that allow patients to access the resources of the health care system.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
CM.3<\/td>\nProvide community oral halth services in a variety of settings.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

PC.1<\/td>\nSystematically collect, analyze, and record data on the general, oral, and psychosocial health status of a variety of patients.<\/p>\n

This competency includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Select, obtain, and interpret diagnostic information recognizing its advantages and limitations.<\/li>\n
  • Recognize predisposing and etiologic risk factors that require intervention to prevent disease.<\/li>\n
  • Obtain, review, and update a complete medical, family, social, and dental history.<\/li>\n
  • Recognize health conditions and medications that impact overall patient care.<\/li>\n
  • Identify patients at risk for a medical emergency and manage the patient care in a manner that prevents an emergency.<\/li>\n
  • Perform a comprehensive examination using clinical, radiographic, periodontal, dental charting, and other data collection procedures to assess the patient’s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
DIAGNOSIS<\/th>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
PC.2<\/td>\nUtilize critical decision making skills to reach conclusions about the patient’s dental hygiene needs based on all available assessment data.<\/p>\n

This competency includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Determine a dentaly hygiene diagnosis.<\/li>\n
  • Identify patient needs and significant findings that impact the delivery of dental hygiene services.<\/li>\n
  • Obtain consultations as indicated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
PLANNING<\/th>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
PC.3<\/td>\nCollaborate with the patient, and\/or other health professionals, to formulate a comprehensive dental hygiene care plan that is patient-centered and based on current scientific evidence.<\/p>\n

This competency includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Prioritize the care plan based on the health status and the actual and potential problems of the individual to facilitate optimal of health.<\/li>\n
  • Establish a planned sequence or care (educational, clinical, and evaluation) based on the dental hlygiene diagnosis; identified oral conditions; potential problems; etiologic and risk factors; and available treatment modalities.<\/li>\n
  • Establish a collaborative relationship with the patient in the planned care to include etiology, prognosis, and treatmetn alternatives.<\/li>\n
  • Make referrals to other health care professionals.<\/li>\n
  • Obtain the ptient’s informed consent based on a thorough case presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
IMPLEMENTATION<\/th>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
PC.4<\/td>\nProvide specialized treatment that includes preventive and therapeutic services designed to achieve andmaintain oral health.<\/p>\n

This competency includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Perform dental hygiene interventions to eliminate and\/or control local etiologic factors to prevent and control caries, periodontal disease, adn other oral conditons.<\/li>\n
  • Control pain and anxiety durign treatment through the use of accepted clinical and behavioral techniques.<\/li>\n
  • Provide life support measure s to manage medical emergencies in the ptient care environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
EVALUATION<\/th>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
PC.5<\/td>\nEvaluate the effectiveness of the implemented clinical, preventive and educational services and modify as needed.<\/p>\n

This competency includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Determine the outcomes of dental hygiene intervention using indices, instruments, examination techniques, and patinet\/client self-report.<\/li>\n
  • Evaluate the patient’s satisfaciton with the oral health care recieved and the oral health status achieved.<\/li>\n
  • Provide subsequent treatment or refferals based on evaluation findings.<\/li>\n
  • Develop and maintina a helath maintenance program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

    PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT (PGD)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
    PGD.1<\/td>\nIdentify career options within health care, industry, education, and reserach and evaluate the feasibility of pursuing dental hygiene opportunities.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
