Veterans Week at Middlesex County College will feature an array of events \u2013 open to the public \u2013 that will\u00a0highlight issues important to military veterans and non-veterans alike.<\/p>\n

Activities include a speech by Raymond L. Zawacki, New Jersey deputy commissioner for Military and\u00a0Veterans Affairs; packing supplies for Operation Shoebox, in which the community is invited to pack boxes\u00a0of items to be shipped to service members overseas; a screening of the documentary \u201cThe Hornet\u2019s Nest,\u201d\u00a0along with a speech by Cpl. Rory Hamill, who was in the firefight depicted in the film; and an art exhibit by\u00a0student veterans called \u201cWarpaint.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe theme of the week is Acknowledge, Appreciate and Contribute,\u201d said Richard Feldman, coordinator of\u00a0the MCC Veterans Services Center. \u201cI think this week will allow MCC students and the general public to get\u00a0to know and acknowledge our student-veteran population and appreciate the experiences they\u2019ve been\u00a0through. It should also be enjoyable and enriching.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program kicks off with a flag-raising ceremony in front of the College Center Monday, November 9 at\u00a010:30 a.m., followed by a meet and greet at 11 a.m. in the College Center Corral. It will include a talk by Mr.\u00a0Zawacki.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, November 10, as part of Operation Shoebox, the public is invited to join members of the MCC\u00a0Veterans and Servicemembers Association to pack supplies collected from the College community. In\u00a0addition, elementary schools in Edison have been collecting supplies as well \u2013 and they are competing to\u00a0see which grade can collect the most. Items include soap, shampoo, granola bars, popcorn, batteries,\u00a0candy, and other snacks. The elementary school students have also been writing letters to the service\u00a0members and those will be included in the packages.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis packing event is a great way for all of us to contribute and tangibly say thank you to our service\u00a0members assigned overseas,\u201d Mr. Feldman said. \u201cAnyone can send us the name and address of a service\u00a0member stationed overseas and we will make sure he or she receives a package.\u201d Please email\u00a0vets@middlesexcc.edu with the service member\u2019s name and APO\/FPO mailing address.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hornet\u2019s Nest\u201d is a documentary with live, raw footage of a harrowing nine-day battle in Afghanistan.\u00a0Cpl. Rory Hamill, who is featured in the documentary, will speak. It will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 12 in the Corral.<\/p>\n

In addition, 13 works of art from the National Veterans Center in Washington will be displayed in the Studio\u00a0Theatre Gallery, which is connected to the College Center. The exhibit will run weekdays, November 2-20,\u00a0from 10 a.m. 6 p.m. The program, called \u201cWarpaint,\u201d was organized by the Student Veterans of America. It\u00a0recognizes artistic talent among post-9\/11 veterans. A total of 40 pieces hang in the Washington Center,\u00a0including a piece by MCC alumnus Travis Barrett \u201915.<\/p>\n
