Alberto Alay\u00f3n looks at the new South Hall building with pride. He knows every inch of it and can tell you\u00a0when the windows will be installed, when the plumbing will be set up, when the electricity will be turned on.\u00a0The senior project manager for EPIC, Mr. Alay\u00f3n is MCC\u2019s representative in making sure the work is done\u00a0right, and on time.<\/p>\n

Thirty years earlier, he was taking classes on the same spot he is working at now. South I and South II,\u00a0which were razed in the summer of 2014 to make room for the new construction, had been used for\u00a0technology classes when he was a student. Mr. Alay\u00f3n graduated in 1984 with an Associate Degree in Civil\u00a0Engineering Technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a great cadre of professors,\u201d he said. \u201cRay Nolan, Frank Rubino, Carl Kiesewetter and Jay\u00a0Edelson, to name a few. They enjoyed teaching and they enjoyed the students. They made it a home for us.\u00a0It was a very positive experience for me. I got a great education.\u201d<\/p>\n

He graduated from MCC, and was awarded an ROTC scholarship from the U.S. Army and continued his\u00a0studies at NJIT in Newark. In 1987 he graduated with a Bachelor\u2019s of Science degree in Civil Engineering\u00a0Technology and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He worked briefly for EPIC\u00a0before being called to active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers during Desert Storm. He spent five years\u00a0on active duty with assignments in Germany and the U.S. followed by three years with the National Guard\u00a0attaining the rank of major, before returning to EPIC. He has been there for the last 25 years.<\/p>\n

Mr. Alay\u00f3n resides in Pennsylvania with his wife Rose of 25 years and has two children.<\/p>\n

This is his first project for MCC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was excited to come back,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of positive changes. Aside from the original\u00a0Arsenal buildings, there were only six or seven College buildings then. It\u2019s kind of coincidental that I\u2019m\u00a0working on the same ground that I stood at when I was a student. It brings back positive memories.\u201d<\/p>\n
