{"id":3157,"date":"2016-03-30T16:19:32","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T20:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mccdemosite1.devsiteurl.com\/mcc-publications\/?page_id=3157"},"modified":"2016-03-30T16:19:32","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T20:19:32","slug":"professor-wins-excellence-award-from-mcgraw-hill","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mccdemosite1.devsiteurl.com\/mcc-publications\/april-2016\/professor-wins-excellence-award-from-mcgraw-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Wins Excellence Award from McGraw-Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christine Harrington, professor of History and Social Sciences and the director of the College\u2019s Center for\u00a0the Enrichment of Learning and Teaching (CELT), received the 2016 Excellence in Teaching First-Year\u00a0Seminars by the publishing company McGraw-Hill.<\/p>\n<p>She accepted the award at the annual conference of the National Resource Center for the First Year\u00a0Experience and Students in Orlando, FL in February. She received a plaque, $1,000, plus travel and\u00a0conference expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harrington is the coordinator of the Student Success course at MCC, which introduces new students to\u00a0college life and helps them become successful. The class covers time management, using college\u00a0resources, motivation, studying, and many other facets of going to college. It focuses on getting to know the\u00a0college, as well as personal and academic success factors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristine is an excellent professor \u2013 she is very deserving of this recognition,\u201d said David Edwards, dean of\u00a0Arts and Sciences, who nominated Dr. Harrington for the award. \u201cShe has become a real leader in the\u00a0pedagogy of helping students transition. She\u2019s done wonderful work in adapting our Student Success\u00a0program to mirror new advancements in the field. She\u2019s outstanding. She never stops thinking about how to\u00a0better serve our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harrington is the author of \u201cStudent Success in College: Doing What Works!\u201d and she uses some of the\u00a0royalties from the book to fund a scholarship for students. Each year, she invites those taking Student\u00a0Success 101 classes to create posters summarizing research findings from a peer-reviewed journal article.\u00a0Three are chosen each December and are honored at a ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harrington said she was thrilled to be selected as the recipient of the McGraw-Hill Excellence in\u00a0Teaching First-Year Seminars Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first-year seminar is such an important course that is offered at almost every institution,\u201d she said. \u201cI am\u00a0honored to have the opportunity to work with students at the beginning of their college journey. Watching\u00a0students gain knowledge, skills and confidence is incredibly rewarding. When you teach this course, you are\u00a0a part of a national effort to help students make successful transitions.
