They are benefiting from NASA scholarships designed to increase their research abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Each are receiving $5,000 stipends from the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium to conduct research with\u00a0professors at MCC. Four started their research in the fall and will finish this spring. The other two began in\u00a0January and will conclude at the end of the summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students are working on various topics,\u201d said Parag Muley, chair of the Natural Sciences Department.\u00a0\u201cThey are all excellent students; we are very proud of their accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Schneider was one of the participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy project was on coordination compounds, which are metals with multiple ligands attached to them,\u201d she\u00a0said. \u201cI\u2019m working specifically with Cobalt 3 compounds and studying the rates of certain reactions.\u00a0Research in this area can potentially help cure disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phalguni Ghosh, assistant chair of the Natural Sciences Department, said Ms. Schneider was one of the\u00a0students who presented their work at a conference this spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did some molecular-level analysis,\u201d he said. \u201cShe has done an excellent piece of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ghosh said the research class has allowed students to improve their critical thinking skills in interpreting\u00a0scientific data; integrate lab skills into the project; develop scientific literature skills; and help improve public\u00a0speaking skills.<\/p>\n<p>Another student, Danielle Caruso, is working at JFK Hospital in its neuroscience lab, studying how cancer\u00a0cells grow.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Wieczerzak is working on examining the life of medication in the bloodstream. Once you take a\u00a0medication, the liver starts rejecting it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you hide this drug long enough before your liver destroys it?\u201d Dr. Muley asked.<\/p>\n<p>Other projects include Denna Lessing using petrographic analysis to investigate climate change and natural\u00a0resources in the state; Amy Walczak is looking at the effects of variables on respiratory cycles; and Joseph\u00a0Cruz examining blood pressure and caffeine research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are top-notch students doing original research,\u201d Dr. Muley said. \u201cMany of their projects have real-\u00a0world implications.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A trip into space may not be in their immediate plans, but six Middlesex County College students are still in\u00a0NASA\u2019s orbit.
