Linda Scherr<\/p><\/div>\n

As Linda Scherr walked toward L\u2019Hommedieu Hall on her first day at MCC in August, she felt some\u00a0apprehension. She had left a job she loved \u2013 an 18-year career, with tenure \u2013 for the uncertainties of a new\u00a0position as dean of Arts and Sciences. She was anxious as she set foot into the building.<\/p>\n

But by the end of that day, she knew she made the right decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are wonderful, talented people here,\u201d she said. \u201cGreat faculty, great programs and it\u2019s a beautiful\u00a0campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Scherr said she is particularly excited about the opening of the new South Hall science building. Classes\u00a0will begin there in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got world-class labs and wonderful space for students to study \u2013 on their own or in groups,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s going to provide opportunities for students to enhance their education by working together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Scherr is also interested in expanding online opportunities for students, including the possibility of\u00a0offering complete degree programs online.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a terrific time to be here as we are looking to do more with online learning, which is where the 21st\u00a0century community college needs to be,\u201d she said. \u201cAt the same time, we have to do it carefully and do it\u00a0right. Online classes are not right for every student or every course.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is also planning to work with the Honors Program Board to continue its work in developing more Honors\u00a0classes at MCC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI view that as a significant part of the community college mission,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Scherr is a historian by discipline, with a Ph.D. in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania,\u00a0and a degree in History and Near Eastern Studies from Cornell. She was a faculty member at Mercer\u00a0County Community College from 1998 to 2012 before becoming dean for instructional effectiveness and\u00a0then acting dean of Math, Sciences & Health Professions in 2014. She completed numerous scholarly\u00a0publications and presentations, largely on archaeology and ancient history, in addition to many on teaching,\u00a0learning and assessment.<\/p>\n

Dr. Scherr is also an authority on General Education programs, and was the co-chair of the state-wide\u00a0General Education Coordinating Committee; she was presented with the Council of County College\u2019s\u00a0Community Spirit award in 2008 for her efforts.<\/p>\n

She also was the recipient of the Patricia C. Donohue Leadership Award from the American Association of\u00a0Women in Community Colleges in 2015.<\/p>\n

Dr. Scherr said she is getting to know the MCC community and its strengths.<\/p>\n
