She will receive a $1,000 scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in Associate Degree programs. Scholars are also encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Nearly 1,000 applications were received.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKat has been an active member of our chapter, which shows her passion for contributing to the betterment of the College community and her fellow students beyond the classroom walls,\u201d said Charlotte Quigley, MCC\u2019s Phi Theta Kappa advisor. \u201cFor the 2017-2018 academic year, she has been elected co-president based on her service to the chapter over the past year. As president, Kat\u2019s focus is on scholarly learning, which is shown in her creation of a community service project to pair two of her passions: a toy drive to benefit a local children\u2019s hospital with a musical event that \u2013 as her research has discovered \u2013 could potentially reduce stress in fellow students who donate a toy. I am so happy she is receiving this scholarship and I\u2019m so proud of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Quigley said Ms. Sikorskaya had also been active in Democracy House, the College\u2019s service learning program, as well as the History and Philosophy Honor Society, in which she won first place in an essay contest.<\/p>\n<p>The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides $200,000 in funding for the scholarships, with $25,000 set aside for members who are veterans or active members of the U.S. military. The remaining amount is supported by donations to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and provides Leaders of Promise Global Scholarships, earmarked for international students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,\u201d said J.
