Officials from Middlesex County College and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have created a joint degree program that links the Biotechnology Program at Middlesex with the Biochemistry Program at NJIT. Students who enroll in the program spend two years at Middlesex; if they graduate with a 2.75 grade point average and are recommended by the department chairperson, they are automatically accepted into the Biochemistry program at NJIT as juniors.<\/p>\n
“This has two advantages for our students,” said Uma Narayanan, coordinator of the Biotechnology program at Middlesex. “First, it eliminates the admissions process at NJIT; they don’t have to apply. Second, because the major at NJIT is biochemistry, it gives them a few more options if they’d like to concentrate more on the chemistry aspects of the field.”<\/p>\n
The accord is the third biotechnology agreement Middlesex has signed; the first two were with Rutgers University and St. Peter’s College.<\/p>\n
Dr. Narayanan said both biotechnology and biochemistry offer graduates numerous job opportunities in research, manufacturing, business, clinical development, quality control, regulatory affairs and sales and marketing.<\/p>\n
“New Jersey is a global leader in biotechnology and is home to one of the greatest concentrations of biotechnology industries in the world,” she said. “Therefore, it is important for New Jersey to continually develop a talented biotech workforce.”<\/p>\n
Middlesex has opened a new state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory this spring.<\/p>\n
“This agreement links two great programs,” Dr. Narayanan said. “NJIT is a wonderful school and its biochemistry program is terrific. Our students will benefit greatly from this joint admission agreement.
