The contest honors student newspapers from two-and four-year colleges and universities in the state.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe have been in the process of building a new type of staff for the last couple of semesters,\u201d said Melissa Edwards, the advisor. \u201cWe are working toward having a community college staff that is ready to move on to a four-year program and be competitive. This is challenging in the new media environment, but we are making progress. We are very proud of all of the winners in the contest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Cartoonist Fernando Locatera won two first place awards for \u201cTransfer Fair,\u201d and \u201cChildcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim Silva, managing editor, was awarded second place in the category of biography\/personality profile for her piece on Professor Jeremy Nickerson.<\/p>\n<p> Monica Dufour, the opinion editor, won second place for her column, \u201cContemplating the Fear of Death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff writer Victoria Levi took second place for her column, \u201cLGBT Community Needs Awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Photographer Rob Rivera won first place for \u201cBreast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale\u201d and third place for a sports photo he took, \u201cMCC Falls to Brookdale CC 61-52.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five members of Quo Vadis, the College student newspaper, recently won awards at the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association.
