Lisa Marie and Orchid\u00a0Poponne both love biology, are taking the same class, BIO 121, and will be together\u00a0in a research class next spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u201dI love biology,\u201d Lisa-Marie says. I want to figure out how the human body works \u2013\u00a0the chemical processes that go on in a living organism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orchid shares her sister\u2019s love of the subject.\u00a0\u201cI want to know why, when I run, my heart rate increases and how various body\u00a0functions work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Orchid originally wanted to go into pediatric oncology, but is now planning earn a\u00a0Ph.D. and become a research scientist. She wants to research cancer, particularly\u00a0that of children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really sad to watch someone who hasn\u2019t started life develop this disease,\u201d she\u00a0said. \u201cYou want to find some way to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their professor, Virender Kanwal, says the current research is heading in the\u00a0direction of \u201csmart bombs\u201d that can target only cancerous cells instead of\u00a0chemotherapy that damages healthy and non-healthy cells alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the future,\u201d she says.\u00a0Lisa-Marie\u2019s sister shares a love of biology, but want to focus more on genetics,\u00a0working in recombinant gene technology.<\/p>\n<p>The two are originally from the Caribbean, but now live in Edison.\u00a0\u201cI love it here at Middlesex,\u201d Lisa-Marie said \u201cIt\u2019s affordable and the teachers are\u00a0excellent.
