Getting Started at MCC

You will need to apply online to Middlesex County College and register for your classes before the school can certify your enrollment to VA.

Apply online for education benefits through VONAPP. Benefit programs change frequently, so it’s important to go directly to the VA website for questions about these programs.

Apply for Financial Aid by submitting your FAFSA. Visit the Financial Aid website to learn more.

Incoming students are evaluated in reading, writing and math skills. The results will be used to place you in the courses appropriate to your level of preparation. Learn more about our Placement Testing.

During MCC Orientation, you will meet with an academic advisor, register for classes and learn from other students and professionals about life at MCC. Sign up for Orientation

Once you are registered for classes, stop by the Center for Veterans Services to see one of our Veterans Certifying Officials.

Our Staff

Frank served 8 years in the United States Air Force as an Electrical & Environmental Systems Craftsman earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Frank achieved the status of Flying Crew Chief where he was afforded the opportunity to travel the world apart of a flight crew actively participating in the Global War on Terror. As a Staff Sergeant he became the Electrical & Environment Systems Shop lead technician managing a shop of 28 Airmen. Included in his awards is the Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Meritorious Unit Award.

Upon his exit from the Air Force, Frank attended New Jersey City University where he earned a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy & Religion. While attending Frank was selected to the NCAA Men’s Golf-All Academic Team, and was awarded the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholar-Athlete Award, Andrew Geyer Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, and the NJCU Presidential Academic Achievement Award.

Frank continued his education at New Jersey City University receiving a M.S. in National Security Studies. While pursuing his Masters, Frank worked for the Professional Security Studies Department as a Graduate Assistant.

Frank states “… I hope to assist my fellow brothers and sisters in arms with the difficulties associated with the transition back to civilian life.”

Brian enlisted into the U.S. Army at 18 years old and completed his Bachelors in Psychology & Masters in Criminal Justice at Rutgers University while serving as a Guardsman. He has served over 5 years in the NJ Army National Guard and is still serving as a Cavalry Scout. His awards include the National Defense Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NJ Merit Award, and NJ State Service Award.

He has previously worked as a VA work-study, a peer mentor for student veterans, and currently works at Rutgers University Behavioral Healthcare – Vets 4 Warriors as a peer support specialist for active military, veterans, and their families around the world in addition to his role as Veterans Academic Advisor here at MCC.

VetSuccess On Campus Program

Our participation in VA’s VetSuccess on Campus Program began with a partnership between Rutgers, Middlesex County College, and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) with the purpose of providing a supportive, on-campus resource to help you make a smooth transition to college life. Valerie Williams, MA, CVE, LRC, is a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who works directly with us at MCC. She provides vocational testing and career, academic, and readjustment counseling services along with peer-to-peer counseling and referral services. We are the only 2-year institution in the state with a VSOC counselor.

Elect your healthcare benefits with Veterans Healthcare Administration
Access, understand and apply for VA benefits (e.g., Disability Compensation, Life Insurance, Education, Home Loan Guaranty, and Vocational Rehabilitation)
Get referrals for medical and mental health care
Get referrals for readjustment counseling services for eligible Veterans and their families
Coordinate with school faculty/staff to provide Veteran-specific services (e.g., VA Certifying Official, Career Center, Student Disabilities Services, Counseling Center)
Find job placement assistance and coordinate with Local Veterans’ Employment Representatives (LVER) and Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Programs (DVOP)
Locate community and other resources

Student Testimonials

Darryl served in the U.S. Air Force in 2006 as an Aircraft Engineer. He spent his career travelling to different places, repairing the C-130 Hercules aircraft. Darryl had a memorable experience in Alaska when he was required to perform emergency repairs on an aircraft there.

The biggest challenge I faced when getting to Middlesex was learning to be a student all over again. Help and support from the people in The Center for Veterans Services has helped me tremendously to adjust.

My advice for new students would be to join a group or network. Having proper support will enhance your experience and increase your chances of success!

Apply For Benefits

Middlesex County College accepts many military-sponsored education benefits. This section provides information and resources to help you apply for and manage your education benefits. We also offer scholarships, financial aid, payment plans, and other forms of aid to offset the cost of school. For more information about education benefits not related to military service, contact the Office of Financial Aid at 732.906.2520.

GI Bill - Which Program Is Right For Me?

Accessing, understanding, and applying for education benefits can be confusing. We’ve put together a Benefits Toolbox to help you. You can also call VA at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) and speak to a entitlements counselor, or visit the GI Bill website.

Please note: You may be eligible for VA education entitlements under more than one program. If you elect to receive entitlements under the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), you may have to revoke your eligibility for any other GI Bill programs. Under certain circumstances, eligibility for other GI Bill programs may be restored by going through VA’s appeal process.

How Do I Apply For Benefits?

After being admitted to Middlesex County College, apply for VA Education Benefits by online application through VONAPP. The VA will process your application and send you a Certification of Eligibility.
Submit the following documents to the Center For Veterans Services:
- Certificate of Eligibilty (If you do not have your Certificate of Eligibility yet, you can submit a printed copy of your online application for benefits).
- DD214 (Discharge from Active Duty). Please make sure it is a copy that lists your character of discharge on the bottom.
- MCC’s Veteran’s Certification Request Form and MCC’s Veteran’s Statement of Responsibility (must be completed and submitted each semester).
Register for classes. MCC cannot certify your enrollment to VA until you are registered.
Upon receipt of all required documentation, your Enrollment Certification will be electronically submitted to VA for processing.

NJ National Guard Tuition Waiver Program

Tuition waivers are accepted* for members of the New Jersey National Guard (Army or Air) who are attending Middlesex County College and are in good standing with their unit.

To use a NJ National Guard Tuition Waiver, you must:

Submit a Commander’s Certificate of Eligibility (NJDMAVA Form 621-2-R) to The Center for Veterans Services as proof of eligibility for participation in this program BEFORE each semester.
Apply for Federal Financial Aid and submit a Middlesex County College Financial Aid Verification Form signed by an authorized staff member of the Financial Aid Office at the time you present your Commander’s Certificate of Eligibility.

*You are required to use available financial aid before the National Guard Tuition Waiver will be applied to your account. Understand that if you are eligible to use the National Guard Tuition Waiver you will not pay for your tuition out of pocket (up to 15 credits). Your tuition will be covered by financial aid, the waiver, or a combination of both. You are still required to cover the cost of any applicable fees due to the College.

Bookstore Voucher Program

Need help purchasing textbooks? The Center for Veterans Services offers funding to military-affiliated students who need help purchasing textbooks. The funding is limited, will be disbursed on a sliding scale, and will only be extended to students who do not receive sufficient funding through a GI Bill® or other military related education benefits.

Eligibility criteria

Currently using education benefits at Middlesex County College earned through military service (your own or a family member), unless your eligibility period has expired. Because of the variety of benefits and benefit eligibility rates, some students may need to be given individual consideration during a meeting with the Coordinator of Veterans Services.
A resident student at Middlesex County College (not a visiting student).
Hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher or be a first semester student.
Be interviewed by the Coordinator of Veterans Services.
Apply for the funds before the semester deadline.
